84000: Translating the Words of the Buddha invites applications for the part-time position of Copyeditor.

The organization

84000 is a global nonprofit initiative to translate the 230,000 pages of the Tibetan Buddhist canon for the open and curious, and to make it freely accessible for all, now and into the future. As a 100-year project (currently in its fifteenth year), we are looking for a new colleague who values long-term professional relationships and thrives in a friendly and stimulating environment.

The position

This role offers a unique opportunity to engage deeply with classical Buddhist texts and contribute to a historic project bringing ancient wisdom to the modern world. As Copyeditor at 84000 you will work as part of the Translation Team, copyediting translations that are approaching publication. This is not an entry-level role—prior professional experience in copyediting is essential.

Qualifications and experience

  • Proven work experience as a Copyeditor, or a similar role
  • Interest in and some familiarity with Buddhist history and philosophical systems, either through personal or formal study

Core competencies

  • Native fluency in English, written and spoken
  • Excellent knowledge of English grammar and a working familiarity with the Chicago Manual of Style
  • Strong communication skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel
  • Being highly organized and detail oriented, in addition to good time-management skills
  • The following would be a plus:
    • Basic knowledge of Classical Tibetan and Sanskrit
    • Specific experience copyediting Buddhist literature

Further details

  • This is a part-time role, approximately 20 hours per week.
  • The location of the position is flexible, and the Copyeditor will be expected to work from home.
  • Remuneration is commensurate with experience.
