We are excited to announce that Dr. John Canti, senior editor at 84000, will join host Joie Chen in conversation on "The Buddha in the God Realms” on Saturday, November 9. This event promises to be an interactive and lively discussion focusing on the Buddha’s descent from the god realms—where his mother had been reborn, and where he had gone to teach her and others—in commemoration of Lhabab Düchen. The auspicious day of Lhabab Düchen occurs on November 22 (the 22nd day of the ninth month of the Tibetan lunar calendar).
John will share relevant narratives and passages from the Kangyur texts as he delves into the significance of this moment and its implications for understanding the different ways in which the gods were perceived in Buddhist India, Tibet, and other cultures, while also reflecting on possible contemporary viewpoints.
