此篇《般若波羅蜜多一萬八千頌》英譯本源自十八世紀德格版《甘珠爾》中所收錄的藏文譯本，與《八千頌般若經》同為於南亞和中南亞地區形成的長篇般若經的版本，很可能是出現於公元五百年之前。經文中包含有現存最古老的長篇般若經（吉爾吉特手稿）中的許多段落，且與《甘珠爾》中的《十萬頌般若經》和《二萬五千頌般若經》結構相似，但與《丹珠爾》中獅子賢論師的《二萬五千頌般若經合論》的結構有所不同。

《般若波羅蜜多一萬八千頌》共有87品，大致可分為三部分：介紹場景的引言部分（第1品），長篇主體部分（第2-82品）與彌勒菩薩的提問（第83品），以及結尾部分（第84-87品）。結尾部分對本經的主要內容作了兩次重要的概括：一是以偈頌的形式（第84品），這一品亦以《聖勝慧到彼岸功德寶集偈》之名單獨流通；二是透過常啼菩薩與其師法湧菩薩的故事（第85、86品）。在簡短的最後一品中，世尊將本經托付與侍者阿難。
