這部簡短的經文描述了佛教觀點中的日蝕。一時，佛住舍衛國，阿修羅王羅睺羅攫取日輪，導致日蝕。日天請求皈依佛陀，爾後佛令羅睺羅速放彼日。另一阿修羅王婆稚詢問此事，羅睺羅解釋道：「佛陀說咒偈，不速舍日者，頭當破七分。」本經廣為傳誦至今，是藏文守護經咒中的一種。
