釋迦牟尼佛在靈鷲山時，附近的王舍城中有位精通咒術的幻師仁賢，他為了贏得摩揭陀國人的敬仰密謀羞辱佛陀，想藉此否定佛陀全知之德。然而，當他用幻術變出一座莊嚴道場後，卻愕然發現自己無法令其隱沒，最終在親睹一連串超然而莊嚴的異象後，對佛陀的殊勝神力心悅誠服。本經的敘述風格多姿多彩、生動幽默，並且包含有關幻相與空性的教法，揭示幻師之幻術與佛陀之神變的區別。此外，佛陀還給仁賢開示了修學菩薩道的四十三組「菩薩四法門」。
