本經中佛陀詳盡介紹菩薩——即理想的大乘行者——應遵循的見地與修道。通過佛陀與人及非人的對話，以及過去諸佛的故事，逐步讓我們了解到出離心、覺悟心、四無量心與六波羅蜜的教法。經中記敘諸多過去諸佛的事跡，其中一則提及燃燈佛為婆羅門善慧授記，預言其將在未來世以釋迦牟尼佛的身份獲得證悟。
