佛陀用名相說無名相法，這令舍利弗驚嘆不已。佛陀接著以至要法義回應，講述「諸法性空」與「無我」不只是哲學觀點，而是諸法的基石。能充分理解、證悟並全面運用「心要」者，才會被視為具備說法和應供資格的僧團成員。那些持一切見為實（甚至認為道和果為實）者，犯下了最為嚴重的破戒之行，皆因他們沒有信解佛陀的根本教義，甚至不該被視為佛陀的弟子。佛陀和舍利弗繼而深入討論比丘破戒的後果，佛陀亦預言比丘之惡行將會導致未來正法的衰微。
