本經講述婆了羅門長老善見的故事。他於聽聞佛陀説法之後皈信佛教，進而在「闇林」建立了佛教僧團。經文記敘了善見的出生、出家爲僧及以神力在闇苑建立僧團的殊勝因緣。隨後，世尊講述了善見前世的行誼與發願，以是善妙因緣而於今生獲得如是之果報。
