本經記敘阿難與佛陀就「無量」這一主題所作的簡短對談。回應阿難不斷地提問，世尊以種種譬喻說明證悟者所具之神通無量，以及諸佛菩薩所住之世界無量。

在開示的最後，如經題所示，世尊以「金沙」為喻來說明：雖然諸佛菩薩有無量無邊化身，但能於某一世界中值遇一佛或一菩薩之化現，仍屬極其稀有罕見之事，如同在大海或恒河沙數中尋獲一粒金沙一樣稀有難得。
