這是一部大乘佛經，經文由佛陀率先開示菩薩道，之後的主要內容則以多位菩薩與聲聞弟子爲會衆説法，而當中又以無所發菩薩宣説之長篇教言為核心，並就大乘佛法的要點和會眾展開對話與辯論。之後，佛陀的諸多弟子亦效仿無所發菩薩，講説各自對於法道的理解，他們的善巧説法獲得了佛陀的讚許和肯定。本經以大乘經典之空性、無二元分別、慈悲方便等法要為基準，開演出一部甚深廣大的勝妙法集。
