His Eminence Khöndung Avikrita Vajra Sakya Rinpoche illuminated the integration of wisdom and compassion through The Sūryagarbha Perfection of Wisdom, using the sun's qualities as a metaphor for the bodhisattva's practice during this Saga Dawa teaching on transcendent wisdom.
On May 31, 2025, during the auspicious month of Saga Dawa, His Eminence Khöndung Avikrita Vajra Sakya Rinpoche—a leading figure in the Sakya tradition of Buddhism—shared profound teachings on the transcendent perfection of wisdom in 84000's live webinar "Sunlight on Wisdom." Hosted by 84000 associate translator Dr. Catherine Dalton, this installment of the Teachings on Sūtra series explored how to integrate practical skills with transcendent wisdom on the bodhisattva's path to spiritual awakening.
In keeping with 84000's 2025 Saga Dawa theme, "The Power of Wisdom," Rinpoche offered a commentary on The Sūryagarbha Perfection of Wisdom (Toh 26), a condensed prajñāpāramitā sūtra presenting a dialogue between the Buddha and the bodhisattva Sūryaprabhāsa. When asked how bodhisattvas skilled in means should train themselves in the perfection of wisdom, the Buddha describes seven aspects of meditative stability—the sun skilled in means—that illuminate the path to awakening.
Rinpoche provided clear explanations and insight on the sūtra, emphasizing the importance of integrating wisdom and compassion when practicing the bodhisattva path. He focused on the Buddha's instructions for developing bodhicitta and practicing the transcendent six perfections as essential to achieving Buddhahood, reminding practitioners to integrate Dharma teachings with personal experience through practice.
Throughout the teaching, Rinpoche highlighted key passages describing how bodhisattvas should train in the transcendent perfection of wisdom, using the sun as a metaphor: just as the sun ripens sprouts, never diminishes, burns dust, melts ice, dispels darkness, revolves around continents, and warms everything equally, so too does the bodhisattva's practice ripen beings, extend compassion universally, burn defilements, melt obstacles, dispel ignorance, liberate from suffering, and gladden all sentient beings.
A central teaching emphasized that for any practice to qualify as a transcendent perfection, it must be done with the knowledge of emptiness in all aspects of the three-fold sphere: the one who does the action, the action itself, and the object of the action. Rinpoche also noted the extraordinary merit generated by supporting 84000's translation work, describing it as giving the gift of Dharma—the highest of all gifts.
The teaching provided both philosophical depth and practical guidance for practitioners at all levels, demonstrating how ancient wisdom texts continue to illuminate the path to awakening today.
