AI Strategic Consultant

Thomas drives 84000’s initiatives for the integration of Buddhist wisdom and AI.

As 84000’s AI Strategic Consultant, Thomas Doctor drives 84000’s engagement with the global AI community by developing projects that integrate Buddhist insights—drawn from the Tibetan canon—into conversations around AI alignment, safety, and ethics. His role bridges technical, ethical, and spiritual domains, seeking to ensure that Buddhist wisdom contributes meaningfully to the development of beneficial AI.

Thomas is Professor of Buddhist Studies and Principal of the Kathmandu University Centre for Buddhist Studies (KU-CBS) at Rangjung Yeshe Institute (RYI), a unique platform bridging traditional Himalayan Buddhist learning and modern academia. Situated within a large living monastery, KU-CBS explores critically informed approaches to the threefold paradigm of learning, reflection, and meditation.

Thomas also serves as the Director of the Center for the Study of Apparent Selves (CSAS), a transdisciplinary institute that brings together wisdom traditions and cutting-edge science, seeking to constructively address the deepest questions of life and progress. Thomas has contributed translations for 84000 since the project’s beginnings, and he remains a passionate translator. As a member of the Dharmachakra Translation Committee, he has translated sacred Buddhist scripture, commentaries, and philosophical treatises.
