First Four Years of the 84000 Journey
Dear friends and supporters,
2013 passed by in a flash. Once again, we are approaching year end activities—a natural time for reflection and reminiscing. As we look back on the progress of 84000 in the past four years—and especially 2013—we would like to offer our gratitude to each of you for your generosity and unceasing support.
In 2013, after four years, we achieved independence from the Khyentse Foundation——a year earlier than initially planned. 84000 is now a registered non-profit organization, fully prepared to undertake the 100-year mission of translating and sharing the words of the Buddha.
Continuing our pace of commissioning new texts every year, we are now working with 152 translators to translate a total of 128 texts or 12,351 pages of translation, roughly to 18% of the Kangyur by the end of 2013.
There are now 15 texts (682 pages) available in our online reading room, including this year’s most recent publications:
• The Sūtra of the Three Bodies
• The Sūtra on Impermanence
• The Play In Full
• The Basket’s Display
• Purification of Karmic Obscurations
The wide reach of the reading room has been phenomenal. Since its launch in January 2012, we have received 1.9 million hits and the published translations have been downloaded 80,000 times. Visitors to the reading room come from 105 countries. (Read more about the impact you have helped create.)
“I read the ‘Purification of Karmic Obscurations’ again and again for four times. You have no idea how much impact this text has on my life. It has transformed me and my life completely,” said a founding sponsor of 84000 who participated in a sūtra resounding.
Your help has a deep impact in the lives of many. It allowed us to support translators, and provided the opportunity for people from all over the world to read the words of the Buddha. Thank you for making all this happen!
Your support will help us continue our translating pace, and advance toward the vision of making all of the words of the Buddha available to the world.
With sincere thanks and gratitude,
Huang Jing Rui, Executive Director, on behalf of the 84000 Team.
