Dr. Ana Cristina Lopes holds an MA in Buddhist studies from Columbia University and a PhD in anthropology from the University of São Paulo. Her research on the globalization of Tibetan Buddhism has taken her across Asia, Europe, and the Americas over years of fieldwork.

Dr. Lopes has held faculty positions at the University of Virginia and the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, and research and postdoctoral appointments at Columbia University, Harvard University, the University of São Paulo, New York University, and Stanford University.

She came to her current role at 84000 through her collaboration with the Dharmachakra Translation Committee. Translating the sūtras, and in particular the Buddhāvataṃsakasūtra, has opened new avenues of inquiry in her research. She is tracing the reception history of the sūtra in Tibet and what that reveals about the broader assimilation of Buddhism into Tibetan culture.
