Dear Friend,

Happy New Year to you!

Since its founding in January 2010, the Buddhist Literary Heritage Project (BLHP) has been steadily working toward its goal of making the vast riches of the Indo-Tibetan Buddhist literary heritage available to the world in modern languages, starting with English.

In the past year, we have focused on developing the necessary structure and policies for the translations to take place in a systematic and efficient manner. We are now pleased to share some news of our progress with you.

Pilot Translations –– 11 Completed

We have completed and reviewed 11 pilot translations, which are now undergoing the last stages of editing. We expect another 16 additional pilot translations to be completed and sent for review soon. The invaluable experience gained from these pilot translations has been vital in the development of our editorial policy, guidelines for translators, and other grant and editorial documents. It has also provided us with a basis on which to determine the appropriate sums to be awarded as translation grants. As our experience accumulates, we will revise these policies and guidelines accordingly.

Translation Grant Proposals –– 21 Received

In August 2010, BLHP announced our first public call for translation grant proposals. We are deeply grateful to the translating community for the amazing response we received. Twenty-one translation teams sent applications which, altogether, include thousands of pages of the Kangyur (the spoken teachings of the Buddha) to be translated into English. The BLHP Grants Committee is now in the process of commissioning the translation of about 3,000 pages of the Kangyur, chosen from our list of preferred texts.

In Memory of Gene Smith

As some of you may know, our dear advisor, colleague and mentor, E. Gene Smith, passed away in New York on December 16, 2010. Please read Dzongsar Khyentse Rinpoche’s message on Gene’s passing. For information and updates on Gene Smith’s public memorial service, please visit Tibetan Buddhist Resource Center.

Join Our Cause — We Need Your Help

“There are only two mistakes one can make along the road to truth: not going all the way and not starting.” – Buddha

The Buddha’s teachings on the sorrows of human existence and how to transcend them on the path toward enlightenment have a timeless and universal appeal. Many early records of the Buddha’s teachings in Sanskrit were lost during social and political upheavals in India. Fortunately, these texts had already been translated into Chinese and Tibetan, and have survived. But now, once again, the survival of some of these texts is endangered by the changing ethos and pressures of modern life.

We are committed to making these texts, containing the Buddha’s pragmatic and enduring wisdom, freely and universally accessible through translation. Less than 5% of the Tibetan Kangyur and Tengyur has ever been translated into languages such as English— so unless we take deliberate steps to save the rest, much of the enlightened sage’s teaching is at risk of being lost to posterity. The present moment, therefore, is crucial.

Without translators and editors, the task of translating the Tibetan texts would be impossible. We can provide sustained support for translators only if we have secure resources for the long term. We sincerely urge all of you to join us and fund this endeavor for the benefit of humankind.

(Gene Smith)
