本經開篇記敘佛陀與無量百千萬億大菩薩眾在王舍城靈鷲山，爾時，勝思惟菩薩問如來二字：何者一法是菩薩所除滅者，何者一法總攝修行之基、菩薩常當日夜護之，何者一法是如來所證覺者。世尊一一為之作答：首先列舉菩薩應滅之法，其次教喻菩薩「己所不欲勿勸他人」，繼而宣說「無有一法如來所覺」。如來所覺，即諸法不去不來，無因無緣，無生無滅，無取不取，無增無減。與會諸眾聞已，誓願流通此經，而世尊進而講說流通此經之利益。
