本經中，妙吉祥菩薩請佛演說，志求無上正等正覺的菩薩，何者決定證果而何者不定。世尊以五種遠程旅行的方式作為譬喻，宣說菩薩在法道上或有退轉、或無退轉的五種行，即羊車行、象車行、日月神力行、聲聞神力行、如來神力行。
