在本經中，世尊講述了忉利天一位天子的前世因緣。天子預見自己命終之後將墮王舍城而受豬身，在極大的痛苦中，他因帝釋天的勸導而在臨終前的最後時刻歸命三寶，由此而生至兜率天。正如經文結尾的偈頌所言，這個簡短的本生故事顯示了歸依三寶的救度之力。
