Teachings on Sūtra | Dzongsar Khyentse Rinpoche

Dzongsar Khyentse Rinpoche speaks on 84000’s publication of the sūtra The Good Eon,  a seminal text from the Kangyur in which the Buddha delivers an elaborate discourse on the six perfections to an audience of bodhisattvas who will be known as buddhas in the future.

In this sūtra the Buddha specifies the names of the thousand buddhas of this fortunate eon, and goes on to describe the circumstances surrounding their birth, awakening, and teaching in the world.

Each and every Buddha of this sūtra is beautifully represented in a massive mural painting that wraps the courtyard of Tashi Lhunpo Monastery, in Shigatse. Fortunately for us all, a member of 84000’s editorial team had the foresight and patience to document the entire courtyard, and in the run up to the publication of this new translation, has graciously shared them with us.

The Teachings on Sūtra webinar series draws from our translated collection of the Tibetan Buddhist canon and explores key themes from the sutras. Each event brings in teachers of the Buddhadharma to speak about the theme with reference to specific texts in the Kangyur, and takes place on what are considered to be the four most auspicious days of the Buddhist calendar: Celebration of the Buddha’s Miracles (Chötrul Düchen), Celebration of the Buddha’s Birth, Awakening, and Parinirvana (Saga Dawa), Celebration of the Buddha’s Teachings (Chökor Düchen), and Celebration of the Buddha’s Return from the Realms of the Gods (Lhabab Düchen).
