Press release:

Design for Wisdom: 84000 hosts a “Doodle” Contest

Preservationists of Tibetan Buddhist Canon crowdsource a doodle to Milton Glaser logo

New York: August 26, 2019—The year 2020 will mark 84000: Translating the Words of the Buddha’sfirst 10 year anniversary, and in a two-month contest respectfully inspired by Google’s homepage doodles, 84000 is crowdsourcing a temporary “doodle” for their existing logo, designed by the globally recognized Milton Glaser Studio. In addition, 84000 is thrilled to announce that Mr. Milton Glaser—a recipient of the National Medal of the Arts, awarded by President Barack Obama—will be adjudicating the submissions!

“Design for Widsom: Doodle for 84000”runs through October 1, 2019, and is open to everyone. The winning “doodle” should adhere to the organization’s tone, and visually encompass both the vastness of the organization’s vision, as well as the theme for their anniversary celebrations, Tech for Wisdom.

The contest is a distinctly participatory way to celebrate a major anniversary, and one that inspires offerings of creativity in the preservation of Buddhism. Combining meaningfulness and creativity, this is an excellent project to work on with design students, to share with artistic friends, or in which to engage children.

The deadline for submissions is October 1, 2019; and the winning doodle will be announced on October 15, 2019.

84000

In 2009, leading academics, Buddhist scholars, leaders, and patrons, recognized that only 5% of the 236,000 pages of the Tibetan Buddhist Canon had ever been translated out of the fast-fading Classical Tibetan language, and that its wisdom may soon be lost to the world, forever. The collaborative organization was founded as the Buddhist Literary Heritage Project, a global, nonprofit initiative with a 100-year vision to translate the Canon into modern languages, and to make them freely accessible to the world.

In 2013, Dzongsar Khyentse Rinpocheconferred on the organization its existing name, 84000: Translating the Words of the Buddha, and it is with deep appreciation, we thank Milton Glaser Studiofor their generosity of time and spirit in conceptualizing and designing our existing logo.

Tech for Wisdom

Having translated or having in-translation almost 40%of the Tibetan Buddhist Canon, 84000’s Tech for Wisdom theme aims to place emphasis on leveraging technology in fulfillment of the second part of its mandate: Making the words of the Buddha freely available to all.

Taking a broad view of the Canon’s accessibility, 84000 is also creates comprehension tools through which readers can more easily understand the nuance and profundity of texts’ meanings. Such examples include the multiple interactive featuresof 84000’s state-of-the-art online Reading Room, such as a linked trilingual glossary and bilingual, source-text view.
