在本經中，世尊應月光童子菩薩所問，講述諸如來所放光明為其證悟成就之顯現，並給予一系列相關教法。在種種神通力的示現中，世尊分別述說每一種光明所對應的功德，並再三闡明：以空無作慧，而現和合光。經文中亦包含一般共通的教法，如大乘行者所需具足之善根資糧以及布施等。
