HH Sakya Trizin

HH Sakya Trizin will be presiding 84000’s first sutra resounding in New York.

“A Gift of Dharma to Kublai Khan”

His Holiness Sakya Trizin will be giving a teaching on “A Gift of Dharma to Kublai Khan” in Walden, NY, on April 1-3, 2014.

A Gift of Dharma to Kublai Khan” was written by Drogon Chogyal Phagpa (1235-1280), who was the fifth of the five great founders of the Sakya Order, and an ancestor of His Holiness the Sakya Trizin. Kublai Khan was the Mongol Emperor of China. While Chogyal Phagpa lived at Kublai Khan’s court in China, Kublai Khan requested Drogon Chogyal Phagpa to compose and teach him this work. It has become a great classic teaching, explaining the Mahayana path with a special emphasis on the nature of mind and reality. Free and open to the public. Offerings gratefully accepted.

Sutra Resounding led by HH Sakya Trizin

At around 4pm on April 3, HH Sakya Trizin will lead a sutra resounding to mark the completion of the teaching. Everybody is welcome to participate!

Sutra resounding draws inspiration from a Tibetan practice considered to be very meritorious. Traditionally, sutra resounding involves many monks reading aloud 70,000 pages of the Tibetan Buddhist Kangyur simultaneously; the written words of the Buddha are transformed into sound, and the altruistic intention of the practitioners – the readers and their patrons – reverberate along with the voices throughout the monastery and into the space beyond.

Now that 84000 has translated 17 texts into English, HH Sakya Trizin will lead a sutra resounding in English on April 3 to celebrate the perfect completion of the teaching. Participants will read sutras that have been translated into English by the Sakya Pandita Translation Group, under the commission of 84000. The texts that will be read include:

This is the first time that a sutra resounding is being organized in New York. Anyone who is able to participate in the teaching and resounding are welcomed to join!
