New Translation Studies Scholarship

We are pleased to share that Khyentse Foundation is offering a scholarship to support translator training in the field of Tibetan and Sanskrit canonical literature. The grant will support students of those languages who wish to follow a course of study designed to educate translators of Buddhist canonical materials into English.

Tom Tillemans, chief editor of 84000: Translating the Words of the Buddha and one of the main architects of the new Translation Studies Scholarship, said that this scholarship will be a major “game changer” in the search for academically qualified and professionally trained translators to translate the Kangyur in years to come. “KF and its donors should be credited with real foresight in generously setting up these scholarships. They will have a lasting impact on the translation of the Dharma.”

Application for the scholarship is open to all students who are enrolled at a relevant academic institution (graduate or undergraduate) in fields such as Buddhist Studies, Translation Studies, and Linguistics. Preference will be given to students enrolled at the following Khyentse Foundation partner institutions: University of California at Berkeley, Hamburg UniversityUniversity of Vienna, and Rangjung Yeshe Institute.

Applicants should preferably be enrolled at the institution when they apply for the scholarship. However, applications will also be accepted from prospective students. In that case, receipt of the scholarship will be contingent on admission into the program.

The size of the scholarship will be determined by the needs of the individual applicants, covering no more than 50% of the applicant’s total needs (including tuition and living expenses) and limited to US$2,500 per semester, or US$5,000 per year.

To apply, students should submit the application form, an essay, one recommendation letter of academic reference, a budget proposal, and academic transcripts. Submissions will be accepted between February 1 and March 1, 2014. Applicants will be notified of the outcome by July 1, 2014.

For entry-level language training support, please apply through the KF Open Scholarship Program.

Applications should be sent to tss@khyentsefoundation.org.
