On August 17, 2013, 84000 had a presence at Dzongsar Khyentse Rinpoche’s public talk in Hong Kong, entitled “The Play of Compassion.” Speaking to more than 400 people from Hong Kong, China, Taiwan, Singapore and Malaysia, Rinpoche gave an explanation of the meaning and symbolism of oṃ maṇi padme hūm, the most prevalent mantra in Tibetan Buddhism. As a symbolic gesture to create a connection with the words of the Buddha, Rinpoche read selected parts of one of 84000’s most recent translations, “The Basket’s Display,” a sutra that details the origin of the mantra.

With more and more sutras freely available online in English through 84000’s Reading Room (read.84000.co), Buddhist teachers and students are able to access these resources to teach, discuss and learn more about the words of the Buddha.

We had many visitors to the 84000 table who were eager to learn more about our projects. Within a few hours, we received sponsorships for the translation of 56 pages of the Buddha’s words. Additionally, a pledge was made to sponsor a 201-page text, “The Teaching on the Great Compassion of the Tathagatas” through the Sponsor a Sutra program.

One of 84000’s Hong Kong volunteers shared:

“I’m very happy to know that many people out there (like myself) are willing to donate their time and money to this big project and share the same vision. 84000 is such a meaningful project that can benefit many people not only in this lifetime but in many more future lifetimes.”

84000 would like to thank all our volunteers and supporters in Hong Kong. Your dedication and support has made it possible for us to continue our mission to translate the words of the Buddha. Thank you so much!
